Many students, parents, teachers, and even school guidance counselors wouldn’t even be able to tell you what a CLEP exam is.

In case you are in this camp, here’s some background information. CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exams are a form of Credit-By-Examination, where a student takes a test, demonstrating his knowledge of the subject, and earns college credit. CLEPs range from 3-12 credits each, and cost less than $100 each. This translates to CLEP credit that is only a small fraction of the cost of typical college credit costs, not to mention the huge time savings.

You would think that CLEPs, being such a great option, would be much more popular today.  Well, CLEP exams, although they mean less cost for the student, they also mean less revenue to the college. As a result, colleges haven’t promoted them much, as it is against their interests. Also, the CollegeBoard has other exams, such as the ACT and SAT that they have focused on promoting, so CLEP just hasn’t been promoted as much.

However, recently CLEP exams have resurfaced, and students have started taking advantage of this great option much more. If you aren’t one of these students, you should consider using CLEP test to help in your degree. You will be doing yourself a huge favor!
